HERE’S WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING!
As a teacher and mother with a degree in early childhood education and special education, I can enthusiastically say that Calling All Neurons! is a game-changer in the realm of educational resources. From the very first page of engaging graphics to its insightful breakdown of reading concepts, this book offers a complete and enjoyable exploration of the science behind reading.
Heather Campbell, M.Ed.Parent, Reading Endorsed Special Education Teacher
One of the most commendable aspects of Calling All Neurons! is its ability to simplify concepts without sacrificing depth. Through relatable characters and scenarios, the book takes children (and adult readers) on a journey through the inner workings of the brain, explaining how neurons, the brain’s building blocks, collaborate to read, spell, and unlock the magic of reading.
Rebecca Tolson, Ph.D., CALT-QI Director, Center for Structured Literacy The University of Akron
As a speech-language pathologist who evaluates students for language learning difficulties, I plan to purchase this book to share with parents as a resource.

I’m very excited for your book! Last night I binged the first 5 and a half episodes of “Sold a Story.” Fascinating. It really provides a context for your work. I’m convinced your book will be a big hit. I have friends with young children who will definitely be getting a copy!
Joel Hughes, Ph.D. FAACVPRProfessor and Director of Clinical Training Department of Psychological Sciences Kent State University
I wish this book had existed 30 years ago when we were struggling with understanding our child’s learning issues. It would have served as a resource we could have shared together. I urge all parents who want to help their children with learning differences to read this book with your child. It may “help the light at the end of the tunnel “ shine brightly a little bit sooner.

I read your “unique” book from cover to cover. I could hear your voice, admired your ingenuity, cleverness, humor, and your ability to make the enormity of reading and writing into an understandable and useful guide for teachers, parents, caregivers, librarians, and school administrators.
Stephanie Gordon, M.A.Fellow, Orton Gillingham Academy Dyslexia Services, Author
This is a nice little book. I think it would be ideal for teachers who know little/none about brain research’s connection to reading and feel that science is “too complicated” to read about. it would make a good book for PD book discussions with a well informed leader

Thank you for this extraordinary book. I have enjoyed reading it but the wonderful experience of sharing it with my seventh-grade student was exceptional. She maintained attention while we share read the first two sections. We are both looking forward to our next lesson and continuing to explore your book.

Earlier in the year, I learned of you and your book on Amplify’s podcast. Immediately, I purchased the book, and have used it as my professional book for our school’s Mentor Book Club. I am an AIS, reading teacher in a middle school, and now I am working on how I will present it to my students. Thank you. I love learning about the brain, and supporting readers!

These are the delightful and insightful ‘neuron characters’ who take the stage to tell the story of how reading, spelling, and writing are developed over time in the human brain.
You will learn each one’s distinct roles, as well as how these specialized neurons interact at top speed to develop new neuronal connections in the brain. It all begins with oral language. Children learn about language from the moment they are born!
The language neuron works with all of the other neurons to make literacy “happen”! From left to right, you will meet the golden “Use Your Noodle” neuron who serves to maintain attention and task completion (Executive Function Neuron), the purple motor neuron, the red language neuron, the blue visual neuron, and the green auditory neuron. The neurons are color coded to help readers identify the locations in the human brain where all the work gets done to make literacy “happen”!
Here is a sample of some of the color coding demonstrating how the auditory, visual, and language neurons integrate and over time, become more efficient, as the new readers become more skilled.
